Spend your days taking in the medieval Old Town on the banks of the Daugava River. This part of the city is incredibly colorful and walkable, showcasing hundreds of years of rich history. Riga has been a major trading center for centuries. However, the spirit of the city today is best seen in its flamboyant art nouveau architecture and cosmopolitan vibe.

One of the most picturesque areas in Krakow is the Old Town, which is home to a number of historic streets and squares, such as the Main Square, where you’ll find the iconic Cloth Hall and the St. Mary’s Basilica. The Old Town is also home to a number of charming cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a great place to while away the hours exploring.

Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea comprised of several tiny villages. Its most popular settlements include Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli. For the purposes of this article, I’ll consider Santorini a city, as these settlements form one municipality.
Santorini’s rugged clifftops formed during a massive volcanic eruption 3,600 years ago. Similar to the Roman ruins at Pompeii, Santorini’s prehistoric settlement, Akrotiri, is miraculously well-preserved. This excavation site sheds light on the Minoan Civilization that thrived here during the third millennium BC.
From sunset cruises to hikes along the coastline, Santorini has something to offer for everyone. Santorini’s white-washed houses, brilliant blue roofs, and crystal clear water are a feast for the eyes. To see it all, I recommend in staying at one of these amazing Airbnbs in Europe. As such, it’s no wonder this is among the prettiest Greek islands.

It would be a crime to write an article on the most beautiful cities in Europe without mentioning Lisbon.
As Portugal’s coastal capital, Lisbon is best known for its colorful buildings, cobbled streets, and seven imposing hills. With no shortage of steep streets and cable cars, Lisbon is the old world doppelgänger of San Francisco. There’s even a bridge in the city that looks identical to the Golden Gate Bridge!
If there’s just one thing you should see in Lisbon, visit the Ascensor da Bica (Bica Elevator). This iconic cable car is found in the Bairro Alto quarter of the city, and it cannot be missed. There’s usually a long line to get on, but the best views are from the top of the street. From here, you can look down on the cable car and tracks below.
Another must-see sight in the city is the Belém Tower. It was built in the early 1500s to defend the city, but later became a lighthouse and customs house. This tower features a variety of architectural styles, including Moorish, Gothic, and Romanesque. Today, the Belém Tower stands watch over the Tagus River and serves as a reminder of Lisbon’s multicultural past.

When in Venice, you’ll see gondolas and ferryboats maneuvering through the city’s narrow waterways.

Würzburg is a beautiful baroque city in the heart of Franconia wine country. It’s often called the Pearl of the Romantic Road, the most popular tourist route in Germany. Würzburg is known for its medieval towns and castles, breathtaking landscapes, and fine wines. After seeing its vibrant baroque buildings and vineyard-covered hills up close, I can definitely see why!
When visiting Würzburg, be sure to enjoy a glass of Silvaner wine on the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main bridge). This was one of the highlights of my visit. Another must is sampling local delicacies at the market square. And of course, exploring the Marienberg Fortress wine trail.
From history and cultural attractions to cuisine, there are countless things to see and do in this beautiful city. Architecture aficionados and wine lovers alike will find plenty to do in Würzburg, Germany.
While some people choose to do a Würzburg day trip from Frankfurt, I recommend spending at least a night here. That way, you’ll be able to fully experience Würzburg’s baroque charm, which makes it one of the prettiest European cities.
13. Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mostar is incredibly unique with its Western and Eastern traditions. Throughout the city, there are many visible remnants of its multicultural past, which include elements of Turkish, Middle Eastern, and other Mediterranean influences. It was once an Ottoman frontier town, which is clearly visible in its buildings today. The vibrant architecture, paired with the mountain scenery and Neretva River, make this an easy choice for a top European city.
From the Stari Most (Old Bridge) to its Mediterranean-style cuisine, Mostar is a fun and authentic city in Eastern Europe. Many visit here as a day trip from Split or Dubrovnik, Croatia. However, to truly experience the magic of this cool European city, you’ll want to stay for at least a few days. For a cheap European vacation, definitely add this city to your list.

These columned walkways were built to shield people from the weather, but now serve as the city’s top tourist attraction.
In addition to these UNESCO-worthy porticoes, Bologna is home to one of the oldest squares in Italy, the Piazza Maggiore. This piazza has an intriguing mix of old buildings, monuments, shops, and restaurants. Unlike Florence’s Piazza del Duomo or Venice’s Piazza San Marco, it offers plenty of breathing room. Yet, it’s still the pulse and soul of the city.
Bologna also has a leaning tower that tilts more than Pisa. Fun fact!
